Similarly, The Children’s Home, founded in 1909 by the Methodist Church, has served thousands of children throughout its history, first as an orphanage, and today serving children in need in residential group foster care, as well as community-based services. Intensive In-Home Servicesis a time-limited, structured family approach to dealing with children and adolescents currently at significant risk for out-of-home placement due to their own mental health and/or substance abuse issues.
Restart provides state-of-the art substance abuse program in a residential setting. The current capacity is eight students and the program is projected to be at capacity by mid-March. From advocating for public policy to promoting effective evidence-based programs with likeminded organizations, we champion the idea that stronger families are the key to better communities. Of families at imminent risk of their children entering foster care were able to remain together after completing our Family Preservation Program. Children's Home Society Of Nc is a Professional Counseling practice in Winston-Salem, NC with healthcare providers who have special training and skill in assessing patient mental health and treating cognitive, psychological, and behavioral disorders using a wide variety of therapy techniques. Professional Counselors at Children's Home Society Of Nc perform diagnosing and treating mental and emotional disorders, providing therapy to clients in individual and group settings, research into advanced therapy techniques and applications, and referral to medical mental health professionals as needed . During the Great Depression, the population of the orphanage increased from twenty eight to three hundred and forty children. Originally, children resided in dormitories housing twenty-five to thirty children; however, societal pressures stemming from the Great Depression emphasized a family setting. Therefore, the orphanage revamped and created a “house-parent” setting that involved twelve children in a cottage with a parental figure.

Outpatient Therapy Services uses a family-centered and strengths-based approach. Our three licensed outpatient therapists work with children and families to help them learn new strategies to overcome the challenges they face together. Outpatient Therapy services currently serves 100 children, with other admissions in progress. Founded in 1909 by the Western Conference, United Methodist Church, The Children’s Home has served children for more than a century.
The Home now maintains youth homes and family-centered outreach programs in eastern North Carolina. The Home also manages eleven youth homes and five juvenile homes staffed by live-in married couples. The juvenile homes help foster a positive alternative to detention for troubled youth by teaching respect and providing guidance. Churches, civic organizations, and individuals in North Carolina are becoming fostering communities for these families. In return, each family will receive training, a home study, and ongoing monthly support throughout the foster care licensing process and beyond.

Admission to the orphanage required a referral from a Methodist pastor in the fifty-six qualifying counties. The directors established Children’s Home in 1909 to serve the residents of Winston-Salem. Methodist Home for Children served as a facility dedicated to caring for children experiencing poverty. Residential Respiteoffers respite care for students who need a break from their current living situation and an opportunity to have their needs thoroughly assessed. The program has been on “pause” since early January while the team has participated in training. The capacity for this program is 10 students and we expect to be near capacity by the end of March.
Significant diseases and conditions treated at Mental Health Counseling practices include substance abuse, anger management, bullying, depression, anxiety, relationships, self-image, and LGBTQ issues. Medical tests, procedures and therapies provided by Mental Health Counseling practices include listening compassionately, analyzing emotions and experiences, determining client goals and insights, developing holistic therapeutic strategies for good mental health. A social worker who holds a master's or doctoral degree in social work from an accredited school of social work in addition to at least two years of post-master's supervised experience in a clinical setting. The social worker must be licensed, certified, or registered at the clinical level in the jurisdiction of practice.
The Farm at The Children’s Home is an integral part of The Children’s Home, as well as a valuable community resource. The animals at The Farm are also part of the therapeutic program for children of The Children’s Home as they help motivate our children to seek out ways to manage life’s adversities. The Farm will be used as a vocational classroom for our children, and proceeds from The Farm help to support the mission of The Children’s Home. From parent education to social and emotional learning for teens, our prevention-focused programs instill confidence and create open dialogue to cope with situations before they reach a breaking point.
Parents have benefited from our early childhood parent education support programs last year. Eustace and Mary Martin Sloop, The Crossnore School, first created as a boarding school for disadvantaged mountain children to live and learn, continues today to serve children in need from North Carolina. The Methodist Home for Children has provided refuge to disadvantaged children and continues to provide assistance for families. A North Carolina Historical Marker located on Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh honors the contributions of the Home. Kingswood Day Treatment Program provides students an opportunity to work on issues and behaviors that may be interfering with their success at home, or in community or school environments. There are currently 22 students enrolled in Day Treatment with another 14 students in the admission process.
These services are delivered primarily in the clients’ homes or community. Intensive In-Home Services currently has one team with eight students and is exploring the option to add additional teams to serve more students. The orphanage’s name changed in 1955 to the Methodist Home for Children and shifted from a strictly residential program to offering outreach programs and services.
The Children’s Home is located on 212 acres on the edge of downtown Winston-Salem presenting an idyllic setting in which to offer hope and healing. The campus is home to cottages, administrative offices, a school, a chapel, and The Farm. Through our comprehensive foster care and adoption services, we empower and assist North Carolina families to experience the strength and possibility of love and family.
This program operates out of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school, Kingswood School, located on The Children’s Home campus. Kingswood School is home to 65 students which includes those enrolled in the Day Treatment program. Invest in the lives of children and make a difference for families everywhere. That extends to children, families and adults throughout North Carolina and beyond. For each person’s specific need, we offer a unique ministry ready to help. Established by the North Carolina Conference of the Methodist Church in 1899, the directors of the Methodist Home for Children , formerly known as the Methodist Orphanage, completed the building in 1900 and accepted Cassie Bright, as its first resident in 1901.
We offer group residential foster care in homes on the Avery and Winston-Salem campuses, as well as community-based foster care and adoption services and clinical services at all three locations. Baptist Children's Homes of North Carolina offers hope and healing to children and families in crisis. Traditional Foster Careprovides students an alternative family home when they are unable to live in their natural homes for a variety of reasons. These foster homes are licensed and trained through our Foster Care and Adoption program and new foster families are currently being recruited for a new training class to begin later this spring. We currently serve 28 students in traditional foster homes with admissions continuing for additional students. The Children’s Home has a staff of about 80 professionals dedicated to providing hope and healing to children in need and is supported by a large base of donors and volunteers.
